Grants totaling $143,250 in tools, training and technical support for data collection are up for grabs.

A new partnership will award 10 state and local governments innovating mobile field data collection grants totaling $143,250 in goods and services in the Smart Communities Innovation Challenge.

Redlands, California-based GIS provider Esri and Swiss spatial measurement instrument manufacturer Leica Geosystems are accepting detailed project proposals to improve data collection around delivering government services.

Proposals should use GIS and GPS technology to support complete, daily workflows. That means back-office processes like operational dashboards, too.

The ability to share geographically enabled data across departments and jurisdictions is encouraged, as is a demonstrated return on investment.

Esri and Leica will supply winners with the tools, training and technical support needed to implement the proposals to the benefit of mobile fieldworkers.

Ideas that can be adopted by other governments to boost the efficiency of things like facility inspections, emergency reporting, asset inventory, environmental monitoring, employee routing, code enforcement, and mosquito abatement are sought.

Application forms can be found on the challenge webpage, and proposals will be accepted starting Aug.15 through 5 p.m. PDT on October 14. Winners will be announced Oct. 31.
