The results are in from this year's GCN Best of FOSE Awards, the annual competition designating the best new products showcased at the annual FOSE Conference and Exposition, being held this week in Washington.Laptop PCs running solid-state drives, secure key drives that self-destruct when tampered with and even an entire portable data center that can be picked up and moved anywhere.The category, which recognizes the best overall product, went to switch tweaked for wireless networks.As in years past, the Government Computer News Lab oversaw the selection process, which picked the best submissions from more 100 different companies. Editorial and testing staffs from Government Computer News and Washington Technology reviewed each entry. Winners were chosen based on four criteria: innovation, usability/applicability to government, relative performance based on specifications and value.Category award recipients include (company, product):In addition, Ace Computers was selected for the for their solution. This award recognizes an innovative solution for government that is not covered under the aforementioned categories.'The U.S. government is the world's largest purchaser of IT products. FOSE continues to be a showcase for the latest in technology offerings for the government ' and in particular, products that meet the government's demanding requirements for scale and security,' said Wyatt Kash, editor in chief of Government Computer News. 'With so many quality submissions, we struggled to narrow down the 2008 GCN Best of FOSE winners, suggesting once again the degree of technology innovation that companies are focusing on for public sector applications.'John Breeden II, GCN Lab director, pointed out that this year saw a wave of new environmentally friendly products. Last year there were only a couple of green products submitted, but this year they appeared in almost every category. This was also the first year that solid-state drives made serious inroads into commercial release, with new desktop computers, laptops and even storage arrays using the technology.FOSE is run by the 1105 Government Information Group, which also owns Government Computer News and Washington Technology.
