The EtherFast 10/100-Mbps CardBus PC Card from Linksys Group Inc. of Irvine, Calif.,
connects CardBus-equipped notebook PCs to Ethernet and Fast Ethernet networks. The
cards 32-bit architecture allows high-speed file and network data transfers.
The CardBus provides 32-bit bus mastering for receiving and transmitting data via the
network adapter without clogging the notebooks processor. The $92 EtherFast credit
card-sized adapter fits into a CardBus expansion slot. It senses and negotiates between
10- and 100-Mbps networks.

American Microdevice Manufacturing Inc., of San Jose, Calif., has designed smart cards
for dominant cellular and wireless network standards: the Global Standard for Mobile
Communications and the Digital Communication System 1800.
The GSM smart cards come in 8K and 16K nonvolatile memory sizes; a 32K model is under
development. They work with mobile telephone handsets to provent fraud and allow database
portability, subscriber identity roaming and mobile wireless networking.
Samples of the GSM smart cards are available now, and final versions will be released
this month. Prices have not been set.

The Worldwide Data Solutions Division of Motorola Inc. has brought up its first
industry-standard, IP wireless data network. The Private DataTAC 2.0 wireless network is
compatible with earlier equipment, and current users can upgrade to it without revamping
their networks.
Private DataTAC 2.0 transmits up to 19.2 Kbps using the RD-LAP wireless data protocol.
DataTAC services include unit-to-unit roaming and group and broadcast messaging.
Software encryption, user-based authentication and over-the-air key management protect
against unauthorized access and message interception.
