Comark Federal Systems has picked up pen-based handheld computers
from Fujitsu-ICL Systems Inc. of Dallas for its General Services Administration
Information Technology Schedule contract.


The federal market for pen-based handhelds has shown some signs of growth recently.


The Federal Emergency Management Agency bought thousands of handhelds earlier this
decade, and pockets of users at the Agriculture and Housing and Urban Development
departments and at NASA have bought thousands more from different vendors.


The Fujitsu TeamPad 7600, which runs Microsoft Windows 3.x or Windows 95 and has 16M of
RAM, sells for $2,590. Users can write with a pen or tap a software keyboard on the color
screen.


A TeamPad 7600 Expansion Station with keyboard and mouse connections, parallel and
serial interfaces, 1.2G hard drive and 31/2-inch floppy drive, sells for $1,277 from
Comark of Chantilly, Va. The TeamPad 7600 Vehicle Support Carrier, which also can charge
the unit, sells for $324.


SMAC Data Systems has added color and monochrome laser printers from QMS Inc. of
Mobile, Ala., to its GSA IT Schedule contract.


The QMS 2425 Turbo EX, a monochrome printer for medium-sized workgroups, has a 133-MHz
RISC processor and 32M of RAM expandable to 128M. It prints 24 pages per minute at
600-dot-per-inch resolution from two 500-sheet input trays and a 100-sheet multipurpose
tray. The 2425 Turbo EX supports multiple printer emulations and standard networking
interfaces.


SMAC Data of Gaithersburg, Md., sells the QMS 2425 Turbo EX for $3,336 or leases it for
$114 per month.


Government Technology Services Inc. has listed the Hewlett-Packard Co. Vectra VL 7 PC
with 333-MHz Pentium II processor on its State Information Infrastructure PC/LAN buy,
which is an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract with the State Department.


GTSI of Chantilly, Va., prices the HP Vectra VL 7 at $2,492 with 64M of synchronous
dynamic RAM expandable to 384M, 512K of integrated Level 2 cache, Microsoft Windows NT
Workstation 4.0, a 24X CD-ROM drive and a 64-bit Matrox Millennium II graphics card.


GTSI has added the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 8000 printer series to its Air Force
printer blanket purchasing agreement through the company’s GSA schedule contract.


For $2,259, Defense Department agencies get a monochrome LaserJet 8000 that turns out
24 ppm at 1,200 dpi. The LaserJet 8000 has a 133-MHz RISC processor, 16M of RAM and three
paper trays. Its monthly duty cycle is 130,000 pages.
