Suite offers just what the IP security doctor ordered

Government users are eager to buy end-to-end IP authentication and encryption products, but vendors 'have to go through a lot of processes' to reach them, said Julie Sullivan, marketing program manager for Anyware Technology Inc. of Los Angeles.
Sullivan said Anyware has formed a separate business unit to sell its EverLink Suite network security product to the government. It has begun seeking Federal Information Processing Standard 141 certification through a private laboratory. Anyware also is working on a General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule contract, she said.
The EverLink client-server software secures file transfers, e-mail and chat over the Internet, intranets and extranets. Administrators can use it to authorize individual outsiders to access designated computers or specific files.
The Java suite behaves like a virtual private network except that it secures an end-to-end connection at the application layer rather than a network-to-network connection, Sullivan said. Once the proxy server authenticates both ends with X.509 digital certificates, it does not have to handle the session traffic, which goes through a Web browser. Because the data does not need to be stored on a server during transmission, security and performance are good, she said.
The suite's EntryGuard server runs under Microsoft Windows NT or SunSoft Solaris and handles authentication via an address book of acceptable uniform resource locator addresses. The EverLink client runs under Windows 9x, NT, Solaris, Mac OS and IBM OS/2 operating systems. It supplies the URL and encrypts the session via the RC2 or RC4 algorithms from RSA Data Security Inc. of Redwood City, Calif., or the Data Encryption Standard or Triple DES.
