The Navy's Joseph R. Cipriano and the Mint's Jackie Fletcher took home Government Executive of the Year awards at the 14th annual Post Newsweek Tech Media Group awards gala in Washington last month, attended by about 1,000 federal and industry IT executives.

Cipriano and the Mint's Jackie Fletcher took home Government Executive of the Year awards at the 14th annual Post Newsweek Tech Media Group awards gala in Washington last month, attended by about 1,000 federal and industry IT executives.Against a background of twinkling stars in the Washington Hilton and Towers grand ballroom, Cipriano took a modest approach in accepting the DOD executive award for developing and fielding the $6.9 billion Navy-Marine Corps Intranet and enterprise software development.'Some people are born great. Some people achieve greatness. Some people are fortunate enough to be surrounded by great people,' Cipriano said. 'This recognition means a lot. It helps to reinforce the rightness in what we're doing.'Cipriano is the Navy's program executive officer for IT and its enterprise acquisition manager for IT.Fletcher, the civilian agency executive of the year, is the associate director and CIO of the Mint. She was credited with revamping the Mint's IT environment by implementing an enterprise resource planning system, and leading and directing the creation of the agency's Web site.'I want to bring more women into the IT field,' Fletcher said, pumping her hand in the air as the audience cheered.Herbert W. Anderson, the president of Northrop Grumman Information Technology, received the 2001 Industry Executive of the Year award. Anderson became president and chief executive officer in July 1998 when Northrop Grumman combined its Data Systems and Services Division and Logicon subsidiaries into a single organization.Anderson said the award was a tribute to the IT men and women at Northrop Grumman for their vision and integrity.Comedian Tom Ryan served as the master of ceremonies and entertained the crowd with his observations on subjects ranging from middleware to baking soda and salt to the benefits of rotary phones and the need of every motorist in the Washington area to have a Global Positioning System device.
