Hewlett-Packard unveils latest line of TouchSmart products, ready for Windows 7.

Hewlett-Packard today announced several additions to its TouchSmart line of notebook PCs, desktops and monitors, all featuring touch technology.

Touch might be all the rage, but it's nothing new for HP, said Anneliese Olson, a director of desktop product marketing for HP. The company actually introduced a touchscreen PC back in 1983, the HP-150.

The new Windows 7 operating system gave HP “a very stable platform to develop in,” Olson said. “Microsoft gave us the plumbing to make touch work.”

HP “sells a computer a second,” she said. “So we need a huge variety” to offer customers. Some are calling 2010 “the year of the refresh,” Olson said. HP is making sure it is well positioned for anyone in need of “refreshment.”

The new TouchSmart products include:

  • The HP TouchSmart tx2 is built upon the first tx2, the first notebook PC for consumers that enabled using two fingers to navigate. It also features a twist display that can be used in PC, display or slate mode with a pen and sells for $799.
  • The HP TouchSmart 300 and HP TouchSmart 600 let users pinch, rotate, arc, flip, swoosh or drag a finger across the screen to access information. The TouchSmart 300 has a 23-inch diagonal screen and sells for $899; the TouchSmart 600 has a 23-inch diagonal screen and sells for $1,049.
  • The HP TouchSmart 9100 business PC has Windows 7 pre-installed and will be available later this year.

Also announced today were the HP Elite 7000 business desktop PC with up to 8G of memory, starting at $789; the HP ProBook 6545b notebook PC and HP ProBook 6445b notebook PC with multiple AMD processors and selling for $799; and additions to the Compaq brand, including the Compaq CQ62 notebook PC, powered by AMD Sempron processor and starting at $399.99.
