Amazon Web Services announced 18 winners of its 2019 public-sector challenge that recognizes organizations for their cloud-based innovations.

Amazon Web Services announced the winners of its annual City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge at its at re:Invent 2019 conference. The company selected 18 public-sector organizations to receive up to $20,000 in AWS promotional credits, up to $20,000 in financial support and up to five training vouchers to help staff and partners master AWS tools and services.

The annual competition recognizes applicants in local and regional governments, private and public schools and districts and organizations that serve the public sector with cloud-based innovations in six categories: constituent services, solving persistent problems, sustainability and equity, powered by AWS, public datasets and dream big.

The 2019 winners include:

The City of Johns Creek, Ga., which used an Amazon Lex bot to automate answering residents' common questions at the call center using data from the city’s open data portal.

The Washington, D.C., Health Benefit Exchange Authority, which used open source Moodle learning management tools in an AWS cloud to develop training modules to help partner organizations get residents enrolled in high-quality health insurance at affordable prices.

The Los Angeles IT Agency, which  implemented the ShakeAlertLA mobile app across the local area, giving users up to one minute of warning before an earthquake hits.

Louisville, Ky., which analyzed open data on dockless mobility trip data from companies like Bird and Lime to ensure compliance and inform safety and infrastructure improvements.

The West Virginia State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which developed the ICAC Data System to assist law enforcement investigating suspected child predators.
