Can Java give Ada 95 a new lease on life
Federal users of Ada 95 hope the less-than-popular programming language can move into the mainstream with a forthcoming compiler that will convert Ada code into Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java applet language. AppletMagic, the conversion program designed by Tucker Taft of Intermetrics Inc., incorporates the AdaMagic front-end compiler to create Java code readable by most Web browsers.

PC era finally dawns at the patent office
This month, 100 patent and trademark examiners will get Pentium PCs with which they can search documents and images at their own desktops. It's a big step in the Patent and Trademark Office's longstanding attempt to create an efficient electronic search environment. By the end of the year, about 700 examiners will work at 133-MHz Pentium PCs with at least 64M of RAM and 21-inch monitors, all running Microsoft Windows NT.

AF decree: Win95 is Desktop IV upgrade
The Air Force has decreed that Microsoft Windows 95 is a software upgrade under the terms of the Desktop IV contract and must be provided free to as many as 300,000 users. The Desktop IV contractors are required to provide free software upgrades for all systems they sell through the contract. The multimillion-dollar contract has brought 486 and Pentium PCs bundled with Windows 3.x and the Microsoft Office suite to desktops throughout the military services
