Google Public Sector unveils Gemini for government services

Agencies already have discounted access to Gemini through Nov. 15 under a OneGov deal.

Google Public Sector on Tuesday unveiled Gemini for government services — an add-on that gives federal, state and local governments access to specialized skills, artificial intelligence agents and integrations with frequently used software.

The suite of tools can help government officials interpret dense regulations, redact documents requested through the Freedom of Information Act, translate jargony documents into simple language and review contracting bids, in addition to completing other tasks, according to a company press release.

Select agencies, including the federal Health and Human Services Department and the State of Missouri, have been testing Gemini for government services over the past few weeks, Chris Hein, field CTO at Google Public Sector, told Nextgov/FCW. The company is accepting additional early adopters of Gemini for government services to field feedback before general availability is expected later this year, he added. There is no target date for general availability.

“Gemini for government services provides a secure environment for agencies to automate workflows, allowing civil servants to focus on delivering the responsive, high-quality services that citizens expect,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, in the release.

Gemini for government services includes pre-built, specialized skills that serve as a set of rules instructing Gemini to execute a task without going off script, Hein told Nextgov/FCW. Government officials can refer to a skill in the Gemini prompt bar that would help analyze regulations, audit expenses and conduct other activities, according to a video demo.

Officials can also access third-party AI agents from other companies, such as Accenture Federal Services and Deloitte, to further assist government work, the release says.

Google Public Sector will “prescreen” the AI agents, which agency IT leadership, not individual users, can enable through a behind-the-scenes portal, Hein explained to Nextgov/FCW. Some agents are already available but most are not yet, he added.

Gemini for government services includes secure connections to technologies officials already use, such as Google Workspace, Microsoft SharePoint, Outlook 365, Salesforce and ServiceNow, the release says. That connector feature extends to federal regulations by digital services company BLEN, allowing officials to search the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, regulations.gov and the Federal Register. The feature includes a connection to Oracle enterprise apps, according to the release.

When Gemini for government services achieves general availability, agency IT leadership will be able to choose which connections they want to enable for which set of users, Hein said.

In the demo, a compliance analyst for a state chief information security officer used Gemini for government services to analyze federal cybersecurity regulations with the pre-built policy and statute assistant skill. After the analysis, the user asked Gemini to draft a ServiceNow incident ticket to remediate contracts for compliance with the federal cybersecurity rules. The user could edit the incident ticket before sending it.

Federal agencies have access to Gemini for $0.47 per agency per year through Nov. 15 under a recently extended OneGov deal.
