Contracting officers kept busy adding new notebook computer products
to federal contracts during the first quarter of fiscal 1999.


Memory and storage upgrades for Dell Computer Corp. Latitude notebooks are now
available on the company’s General Services Administration Information
Technology Schedule contract. A second 6.4G hard drive to double the
Latitude’s internal storage is $466.


Dell also sells the $186 Imation LS-120 SuperDisk, which has 120M of removable mass
storage, for the Latitude CP and CPi models. In addition, Latitude owners can get a 128M
small-outline dual in-line memory module for $466 and one twice that size for $933.


Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. notebooks are new on the GSA IT
Schedule contract held by Vanstar Government Systems Inc. of Fairfax, Va. The
$3,349 Toshiba Tecra 8000 has a 300-MHz Pentium II processor, 64M of dynamic RAM, a 6.4G
hard drive, 13.3-inch active-matrix display, 24X CD-ROM drive, 2.5M of synchronous
graphics RAM and Microsoft Windows 95.


On its Army Portable-2 contract, Vanstar has replaced the IBM Corp.
ThinkPad 380D with the $2,350 ThinkPad 380Z. It has a 233-MHz Pentium II processor, 32M of
RAM and 4G smart hard drive. The 7.1-pound notebook comes with a choice of Windows 98 or
Windows NT Workstation 4.0.


Both Vanstar and Government Technology Services Inc. of Chantilly, Va., have put
Hewlett-Packard Co. printers on their Army Enhanced Technology-1 blanket
purchasing agreements. GTSI chose the $2,375 LaserJet 4500 to replace the Color LaserJet
5. The 4500 has 32M RAM and prints up to 4 pages per minute in color or 16 ppm in
monochrome.


Vanstar’s ET-1 BPA features the $2,499 monochrome HP LaserJet 8100, which prints
32 ppm. It has a 166-MHz RISC processor, 16M of RAM, 1,200-dot-per-inch resolution and
150,000-page-per-month duty cycle.


GTSI’s NASA Scientific and Engineering Workstation Procurement II contract
now lists Sun Microsystems Inc. workstation and server products.


Dunn Computer Corp.’s Air Force Desktop V contract includes
on-site PC and server installation as a standard feature. Agencies with multimedia
training needs can get digital video disk drives bundled with the Dulles, Va.,
company’s 760 series Pentium II workstations for an extra $190 up.


Dunn’s 8400 quad-processor 450-MHz Pentium Xeon server comes with 2M of Level 2
cache and memory expandable to 4G, priced from $19,131.
