The IRS recently ordered 805 top-of-the-line Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. notebook computers for $3 million.

The IRS recently ordered 805 top-of-the-line Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. notebook computers for $3 million.

Comark Federal Systems of Chantilly, Va., gave the Office of the Inspector General for Tax Administration about 25 percent off the General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule contract price for the notebooks, said Greg Roseman, an IRS contracting officer.

'They wanted Toshiba,' he said. 'I checked around and no one could beat' Comark's price.

The IRS office chose the Satellite 4080XCDT notebook with a 366-MHz mobile Pentium II processor, 128M of RAM expandable to 192M, a 6G hard drive, a 24X CD-ROM drive and a 56-Kbps modem, said Alan Bechara, Comark's vice president and chief operating officer.

The IRS' Satellite notebook runs Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and has a 14.1-inch display, a Xircom Inc. Ethernet card, a port replicator and a three-year carry-in warranty, he said.

Comark is shipping the notebooks to 11 IRS sites with a custom image that partitions the hard drives into 4G and 2G portions, Bechara said.

The reseller also is installing dial-up networking software as part of the modem installation, he said.

IRS officials requested that TCP/IP be the only networking protocol and that the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol be enabled, Bechara said.

He said Comark doubled the standard amount of RAM.

'Nothing is simple anymore,' Bechara said of federal PC procurements, adding that price is not the sole determinant.

'That's probably why they chose us,' he said.
