IMC Networks multiplexer connects several nets in a building

Each port supplies more than 1.5-Mbps T1 bandwidth that administrators can allocate per port

By William JacksonGCN StaffIMC Networks' ipMux, a secure multiport IP multiplexer, can extend LANs or deliver network connections to multiple independent users within a building.The ipMux has one 10Base-T Ethernet uplink port that connects to a LAN, an Internet or cable provider, or a telephone carrier. Its four 10Base-T downlink ports can connect to PCs' network interface cards or to switching equipment with multiple devices on each port.The ipMux fits into the one-, two- and 12-slot PowerChassis line made by IMC Networks of Foothill Ranch, Calif. A hardware path from each downlink port to the uplink port secures all connections because there is no data path between the downlink ports. A network administrator or service provider can allocate the bandwidth per port via a management engine. Even at maximum load, each port supplies bandwidth higher than 1.5-Mbps T1, company officials said.'This is a departure from what we've done in the past,' said product marketing manager John Lillywhite. Until now, the company has concentrated on copper-to-fiber media conversion products. Lillywhite predicted that in the next two years media conversion technology will mature and prices will drop.He said the ipMux has been in beta testing with about 40 users since April. IMC Networks does about 30 percent of its domestic business with the government. The first ipMux version will sell for $1,400.Future ipMux devices will support asynchronous transfer mode, the Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification, Integrated Services Digital Network, digital subscriber line and 10/100-Mbps Ethernet connections at the uplink port. The downlink ports, expandable to eight, will support DSL, ISDN and 10/100-Mbps Ethernet.
