The General Services Administration has selected a second digital certificate vendor under the Access Certificates for Electronic Services program. Meanwhile, the National Institutes of Health has negotiated the first task order under the initial ACES contract.

The General Services Administration has selected a second digital certificate vendor under the Access Certificates for Electronic Services program. Meanwhile, the National Institutes of Health has negotiated the first task order under the initial ACES contract.

GSA's Federal Technology Service most recently awarded Operational Research Consultants Inc. of Chesapeake, Va., an ACES contract. Last month, the agency awarded Digital Signature Trust Co. of Salt Lake City the first ACES contract [GCN, Sept. 27, Page 6].

Through ACES, GSA wants to create a governmentwide digital certificate service through which agencies could establish public-key infrastructure programs and interact with citizens online.

Before NIH submitted a task order for Digital Signature service, the Education Department also expressed interest in using the program, said Judith A. Spencer, ACES project manager and director of FTS' Center for Governmentwide Security.

The first certificates will be issued in about three months, pending accreditation of certificate authorities, Spencer said. Agencies wanting to use ACES must do some prep work, which includes developing the online applications and then integrating PKI technology into those applications.
