By Chris DriscollGCN StaffRaosoft Inc. has automated downloading and processing of data collected from Web and intranet sites in the latest version of EZSurvey 99 for the Internet.The Air Force, Navy, and Veterans Affairs and Transportation departments use previous versions of the Seattle company's applications for creating and electronically distributing questionnaires and gathering the answers in a self-contained database.EZSurvey 99 can e-mail a questionnaire via Post Office Protocol 3 or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or publish it directly to a Web site. The program automatically collects the results from an e-mail account or Web site. Surveys can be distributed by standard e-mail applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus cc:Mail, Novell GroupWise or Eudora from Qualcomm Inc. of San Diego.Fast surveys have increased the use of questionnaires, said Jim Woodmansee, a Transportation Department survey specialist who has experience with the Raosoft product. He said surveys help officials better evaluate the options before committing money and time to specific projects.'We did one big survey with [EZSurvey] so far this year,' he said. 'It beats doing it the old way, handling everything manually.' EZSurvey 99 for the Internet has several improvements over the previous versions, said Catherine McDole Rao, Raosoft president and chief executive officer.The 32-bit application runs under Microsoft Windows 9x and Windows NT 4.0. It requires 2M of storage and can handle an unlimited number of questions and records, Rao said.Internet features include an auto-download function that checks a survey Web site and retrieves new data. A bookmark feature lets respondents re-enter an EZSurvey questionnaire as many times as they wish, namelessly in anonymous surveys.The software saves Web responses directly into an EZSurvey database. E-mail responses are returned in text format and automatically converted into the EZSurvey format, which is compatible with leading database management programs.Users can generate reports in many formats, including Adobe Portable Document Format. They can also create reports from EZSurvey results with other database applications.EZSurvey 99's Web site development environment can embed Hypertext Markup Language and JavaScript in Web pages. The pages can include matrix-type tables. A bulk e-mail option tracks received responses for resending.The $399 price includes an unlimited-use license; upgraders pay $199.
