Legato revamps lines and adds offsite backup

Version 3.2 of Legato's server-based data-replication software works with Microsoft Cluster Server and another Legato product, CoStandbyServer.Both OffSite Archive and Octopus come from Legato's new data availability division, which incorporates much of Vinca. 'The end benefit of Octopus and OffSite is the same, but the technologies are very different,' Richards said.OffSite Archive takes snapshots of a server's data at specified intervals and sends to the data vault only what has changed since the last backup, Richards said. The originating server keeps four to 32 snapshots at a time.OffSite Archive moves blocks of data without looking at the files themselves, said Greg Stewart, Legato's mid-Atlantic regional manager. The point-in-time recovery method is most valuable in transactional environments, Richards said.OffSite Archive functions with or without Legato StandbyServer for Netware, Richards said. With StandbyServer, the block-level data mirroring occurs over a high-speed connection; when OffSite Archive is used standalone, the links can be lower-cost networks.Legato Octopus supports long filenames and data throttling, in which the user specifies how much bandwidth to consume during file replication. For instance, the backup could be restricted to 10 percent of network resources during working hours and close to 100 percent overnight, Richards said.OffSite Archive lists for $7,999, including one year of telephone support and software maintenance. A customized package, including training and consulting services, goes for $17,999 commercially, Richards said.Octopus for NT lists for $2,499 per server, including support and maintenance. It is available through the General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule contract of DLT Solutions Inc. of Herndon, Va.
