Advanced Digital Information Corp., a maker of automated tape libraries, is taking what it calls an open-systems approach to storage area networks.

By Patricia DaukantasGCN StaffAdvanced Digital Information Corp., a maker of automated tape libraries, is taking what it calls an open-systems approach to storage area networks.The Redmond, Wash., company will put together storage network packages, called Open SAN Solutions, that contain multiple vendors' components, said Steve Whitner, ADIC's marketing director.Storage area networking has become popular because it lets managers take big data transfer operations off their LANs, Whitner said.Although ADIC principally sells tape libraries, the company has been helping customers assemble storage packages and decided to start offering the service commercially.'We're trying to give people an open approach to storage area networking but at the same time give them one of the advantages they have with closed proprietary systems: You know that things work together, and you have one place to call if something goes wrong,'' Whitner said.In addition to its own tape libraries, ADIC will build in networking hardware from third parties such as Ancor Communications Inc. of Minnetonka, Minn., Emulex Corp. of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Finisar Corp. of Mountain View, Calif.The company also will install third-party SAN software from Computer Associates International Inc., Legato Systems Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., and Veritas Software Corp. of Mountain View, Calif.ADIC can support the combined systems, Whitner said.The ADIC packages include initial consulting and planning, physical installation, hardware, software in-tegration and single-call follow-up support.Users can buy on-site service for up to one year.Whitner estimated that a good-sized installation with 10T of data on about 50 servers would cost $75,000 to $100,000. A small package for storing several hundred gigabytes of data would cost about $30,000.
