By Patricia DaukantasGCN StaffBroken links are the visible signs of aging on an intranet or Web site.The Hyperwave Information Portal sets out to eradicate broken links by aggregating and managing the content, said Tim Kounadis, vice president of North American marketing for Hyperwave Information Management Inc. of Westford, Mass.The portal software, based on the company's Hyperwave Information Server platform, manages every hypertext link within the portal. The link integrity feature automatically deletes links to vanished pages and missing documents, Kounadis said.'For a portal to be effective, it has to be the place where you actually work,' he said.Each portal user logs on to a personal home page with documents and Web bookmarks, database reports, enterprise applications and workgroup discussion forums. The portal even makes headlines available. 'We think it's important to plug some news into the portal,' Kounadis said.The portal system handles both unstructured and structured content, he said. Examples of unstructured content include desktop and Web documents. Structured content encompasses queries, reports and data from enterprise resource planning applications.Users can publish documents right from their browsers, and a rights wizard lets them choose access rights for each document, Kounadis said. Colleagues see only the documents they have permission to read.'Users aren't taunted by information they can't have,' spokeswoman Dori Taratoot said.Hyperwave integrates with groupware such as Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange, Kounadis said. The portal system comes with a Hypertext Markup Language editor and supports other Web standards such as Java and the Extensible Markup Language.The Hyperwave Information Portal software runs under Microsoft Windows NT, Linux and multiple versions of Unix. A beta version is available for the commercial price of $39 per user up to 2,500 users. General release is set for early 2000.
