SSC San Diego does much of its fee-for-service work for its parent, the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, and for the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, LaPuzza said.'Our leadership role in the growth industry of information resources'sensors, fusion and analysis capabilities, modeling and simulation, networks, software, database technology, etc.'continues to bring in funding, while there are fewer dollars for traditional acquisition items like weapons systems and platforms,' he said. Brig. Gen. Steven Boutelle, the Army's program executive officer for command, control and communications systems at Fort Monmouth, N.J., wants to upgrade the Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below operating environment from SunSoft Solaris 7 to Solaris 8. The problem, he said, is that for cost reasons, the service usually upgrades software only every other major version.Boutelle said he likes Solaris 8's improved fault tolerance, error-handling capabilities and security features. The Defense Department's Enterprise Software Initiative agreements have saved DOD about $70 million on software, said Rex Bolton, chairman of the ESI Working Group, a joint services group of Defense officials.Bolton said the savings were mostly from purchases of relational database management software from Informix Software Inc. of Menlo Park, Calif., Oracle Corp. and Sybase Inc.ESI's primary mission, however, is not to set up software agreements but to help DOD manage software assets, he said.Bolton said he wants to turn over management of ESI to the individual services by year's end. Maj. John R. Burnette, who helped direct the Marine Corps' migration of 132,000 accounts to Microsoft NT Server 4.0 and Exchange 5.5, will retire June 1.Burnette, a 20-year veteran who oversaw the migration from Vines 8.5 and StreetTalk 8.5 from Banyan Worldwide of Westborough, Mass., and from Lotus Notes, started as a combat engineer and went to postgraduate school in 1989, emerging as a data systems officer. He performed much of his high-profile work since 1994 for the Marine Corps Systems Command. Burnette helped install the Global Command and Control System and the Secret IP Router Network.
