Xerox Corp. has updated its DocuShare software and released a query package called askOnce.

New features in DocuShare 2.1, a Web-based document-sharing system, include saved queries, e-mail notification of updates and document summaries, said John Dasher, director of product marketing for Xerox's Software Solutions Group.

The saved-query function lets users type in a simple or complex query and save it for updating later, Dasher said. The query can be secured so that only workgroup members have access to it.

DocuShare 2.1 sends e-mail to subscribed users notifying them of changes to the predefined queries. It also creates document summaries on the fly without requiring users to open the documents beforehand.

DocuShare 2.1 runs under Microsoft Windows NT and SunSoft Solaris and uses existing Web browsers as clients, Dasher said. It no longer requires the separate purchase of Windows client software.

The new askOnce browser-based metasearch software conducts secure, real-time searches on multiple internal and external sources, from Web sites to an organization's own databases, using the AltaVista search engine.

Organizations customize their askOnce searches through wrappers written in Java. Xerox has created wrapper development kits for DocuShare, Documentum from Documentum Inc. of Pleasanton, Calif., Oracle Corp. databases and Lotus Notes. A kit for Microsoft Exchange will be ready soon.

List prices for 50-seat, 500-seat and unlimited DocuShare 2.1 configurations are $4,995, $19,995 and $49,995, respectively. AskOnce costs $4,995 for a 50-seat configuration and $19,995 for a 500-seat configuration.

The software is not yet discounted on the General Services Administration's Information Technology Schedule, Dasher said.
