APRIL 10—Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, and ranking Democrat Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) last Friday wrote to the heads of 24 agencies inquiring about their implementation of the Information Technology Management Reform Act.

"Each year we get reports from agencies, the media and [General Accounting Office] detailing how many federal information technology programs are mismanaged. We passed the [ITMRA] to remedy these problems, and now we will be persistent in holding agency heads accountable for compliance with this law," Thompson said."I look forward to learning for the first time how [ITMRA] is really working," Lieberman wrote. "Since Congress passed legislation four years ago to address some serious shortcomings, we need to follow up to ensure those reforms are being implemented."

APRIL 10'Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, and ranking Democrat Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) last Friday wrote to the heads of 24 agencies inquiring about their implementation of the Information Technology Management Reform Act.

The letters ask how the agency heads are designing and implementing processes mandated under the 4-year-old legislation. They ask specifically about:


  • Effective use of chief information officers
  • Benefits from capital planning and investment control processes
  • Management of information technology for overall performance and results
  • Impact on business processes
  • IT acquisition.
