Universal Update 1.6, from Sundog Technologies Inc. of Salt Lake City, filters information from multiple databases and makes it available to users.

The client-server software extracts data in read-only mode from heterogeneous data sources and stores it in a target database compatible with common client applications, said Greg Stewart, Sundog's mid-Atlantic regional manager.

The sources can be database managers such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Corp.'s Oracle8i, IBM Corp.'s DB2 or Sybase Inc.'s Adaptive Server. Data sources also can be simple collections of text and image files, Stewart said.

The software first stores the data in the Universal Update server and then publishes it into one or more target databases accessible to client users. They can load information from the Universal Update target database into applications such as Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel, or into personal digital assistants, Stewart said.

Filters can be set to extract only certain data from the source databases for pushing to the target spreadsheets or databases.

The Universal Update server software runs under Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT, SunSoft Solaris 2.6 and Linux operating systems. The client software works with most PC operating systems, including Windows 2000.

A 30-day evaluation copy of Universal Update is downloadable from the company's Web site, at www.sundog.com. Starting price is $24,995 for one client and one server license, Stewart said.
