NGIA plans to deploy MiserWare's Granola Enterprise and Datacenter software, which lets organizations track energy use and savings across thousands of computers.

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is looking to cut power consumption and costs in facilities and data centers throughout the U.S. with new power management software.

NGIA plans to deploy MiserWare’s Granola Enterprise and Datacenter software, which lets organizations track energy use and savings across thousands of computers. The software is available to NGIA through a strategic partnership between MiserWare and In-Q-Tel, the CIA-owned investment firm that identifies innovative technologies to support the U.S. intelligence community.

MiserWare will help NGIA reduce power costs and its carbon footprint, said David White, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency liaison with In-Q-Tel.

“We look forward to deploying this capability at our new headquarters in Springfield, Va., and across our two major facilities in the St. Louis, Mo., area as well as our support teams worldwide, in the near future,” White said.

The Obama administration has spurred agencies to reduce energy consumption and eliminate and consolidate data centers through Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance Executive Order 13514 and the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative.

However, agencies need the necessary tools to measure, monitor and streamline IT energy costs, experts say.

Using Granola, the NGIA can save as much as 35 percent of total system energy without ever affecting the computer’s working performance, MiserWare officials said. The software automatically slows down the processor when the workload is low and brings it back up to maximum speed when needed.

MiserWare will work closely with In-Q-Tel and its users to expand the features of the Granola Datacenter software, company officials said.
