Medical screenings, mental health and substance abuse services are all under one roof.

Patients making psychiatric visits didn’t see why they needed medical screenings at first, but soon they came to appreciate Long Beach Mental Health Care Clinic’s enhanced system of holistic care.

Los Angeles County integrated basic screenings like checking blood pressure, along with substance abuse and mental health services, into clients’ treatment plans.

Now patient obesity and diabetes information is regularly monitored, psychiatric hospitalization has “dramatically” declined and the county is saving money.

“We’ve become a lot more efficient, so I think the clients appreciate that, as well as the clinicians, as well as the psychiatrists,” says Supervisor Gabriela Zuniga in this California State Association of Counties video . “The response coming from the clients, as well as the response from the county itself, has been really rewarding.”

Using a team approach, clients without medical doctors are connected with the clinic’s health navigator, Berta Martinez, who helps map out their care.

Many patients are Spanish-speakers, but Martinez knows the language—ensuring they have access to care too.

“They know that they have someone they can connect with,” said Courtney Cabrera, psychiatric social worker at the clinic. “If their case manager’s not available, if their therapist isn’t available, they know that there’s a contact person.”
