Unlike other governors, Andrew Cuomo isn’t fighting the federal Clean Power Plan and wants his state to be the “nation’s leader in the fight against climate change.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo delivered his 2016 State of the State address last week and in it, laid out some some very bold clean energy goals.

“We previously set a goal that 50 percent of New York’s energy must come from renewables by 2030,” the governor said. “This year it’s no longer a goal—it is now a requirement. And it makes New York the nation’s leader in the fight against climate change and that’s something we should all be proud of.”

In fact, Cuomo said that his state will phase out the use of coal-fired power plants by 2020.

Currently, 27 states are suing the Obama administration over the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan , which lays out a regulatory roadmap for state governments to comply with federal clean energy standards. Many governors have said the Clean Power Plan is too costly, has too much red tape and will harm state economies.

Cuomo is not part of that group and New York state is not challenging the federal government in court. The governor and his administration is looking ahead.

“New York state has a business and an environmental opportunity,” the governor said in his address. “Let’s become the international capital for clean and green energy products.”
