GCN names 2014 executives of the year
GCN names Department of Army Deputy CIO Michael Krieger, Central Intelligence Agency CIO Doug Wolfe and FireEye Inc. Global Government Liaison, Tony Cole as 2014 GCN executives of the year.
Three executives who helped transform the government enterprise as champions for new, innovative technologies to streamline agency operations and costs have been named GCN’s 2014 IT executives of the year.
Michael Krieger, the Army deputy chief information officer-G6, is the recipient of GCN’s 2014 Hall of Fame Award.
Krieger has helped guide the Army toward its digital, networked future. Since becoming the Army deputy CIO/G-6 in July 2008, he has worked tirelessly to create a strategic direction for the Army’s network and enterprise infrastructure.
Last year he led the department toward completion of its migration to enterprise email services, a transition that covered 1.5 million users in the unclassified NIPRNET and 100,000 users on the classified SIPRNet. The project is estimated to save the Army $380 million through 2017.
Just last month, Krieger was at the scene when the Army and Air Force carried out significant network security and capacity upgrades at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, in partnership with the Defense Information Systems Agency.
The project represents the first time the Army and Air Force were able to move data over the same network, increasing network capacity and security in pairing their switching technologies and security stacks.
Krieger served 25 years in the U.S. Army, with assignments in tactical communications and command and control. He previously served as the principal director for the Deputy DOD CIO.
Doug Wolfe, the CIO of the Central Intelligence Agency, was named GCN’s Government IT Executive of the Year.
Wolfe has ushered in the era of cloud computing in the intelligence community, helping guide the move to Amazon Web Services first as CIA deputy CIO in 2012 and since stepping into the CIO role last year.
The $600 million hosted cloud solution, which recently came online, will provide services on demand to 17 agencies of the intelligence community, for which CIA is the executive agency responsible for providing services.
Tony Cole, global government liaison for FireEye Inc., was named GCN IT Industry Executive of the Year.
Cole has been an evangelist in the cause of developing responses and approaches to a new generation of motivated hackers launching increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.
Cole has been immersed in cybersecurity since before it was an industry. In 2002, he retired after a 20-year career in the Army, where his last assignment was as technical operations manager for network security services at the Pentagon, responsible for overseeing security teams for the Pentagon backbone.
Cole spent the next 11 years in a number of cybersecurity firms, including Symantec and McAfee. He joined FireEye in 2013 as vice president and global government CTO, where he acts as a liaison with governments, helping agencies understand the new realities he’s observed on the cyber threat landscape and the need to move defenses beyond static detection.
GCN will present the awards Oct. 14th at the 27th Annual GCN Awards Gala at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Tysons Corner, Va., where the winners of this year’s awards for agency IT projects also will be honored.
