Integrated Maintenance Data System. IMDS is intended to absorb several legacy maintenance
systems starting in late 1997.
Under a nine-month, $500,000 contract, Loral's Federal Systems Group will design an
architecture for a single system and develop a method for integrating data from systems
such as the Core Automated Maintenance System/Reliability and Maintainability Information
System. CAMS/REMIS is one of several Air Force systems that track parts, service schedules
and other maintenance data on aircraft and weapons systems.
Next year, after evaluating prototypes from Loral and other contractors, the Air Force
will conduct an open competition for the 10-year IMDS contract, which is expected to be
worth over $300 million.
The Defense General Supply Center, a Defense Logistics Agency inventory control point
in Richmond, Va., supplies DLA, sends catalogues to DOD and civilian agencies offering
everything from food service equipment to aircraft parts.
Now DGSC is starting to hawk its wares on the Word Wide Web. Full text versions of
catalogs for environmentally preferred products--including recycled toner
cartridges--energy efficient lighting and law enforcement equipment can be found at http://www.dgsc.dla.mil.
Browsers can even pull up MILSTRIP or FEDSTRIP requisition forms and place orders
on-line. A DGSC official said other catalogs will follow.
Not only has Congress put a temporary halt on talk of outsourcing the Defense
Information Systems Agency's data processing megacenters, it is also encouraging them to
plan for the future.
In its fiscal 1996 Defense appropriations bill, the Senate authorizes $72 million for
the construction of a new Defense Finance and Accounting Service office complex in
Columbus, Ohio.
According to a DFAS official, the new facility will include snazzy new digs for DISA's
Columbus megacenter. Asked why DFAS and DISA want to construct a new building instead of
renting existing office space in Columbus, the official said an ""exhaustive
study'' of available commercial facilities had concluded that none would meet DFAS needs.
The National Communications System, part of DISA, has hired Booz, Allen & Hamilton
Inc. to provide systems engineering and technical assistance for the NCS Office of the
Manager. Booz, Allen won a $6 million, one-year contract that DISA can extend four
additional years.
