Southern District officials use Check 2000 to test date code readiness of PCs

Although some agencies are replacing hundreds of unready PCs before 2000 arrives, court officials in the Southern District of New York plan to keep their aging systems for a while.

''In addition to installing patches for file management and file export downloaded from Microsoft Corp.'s Web site, plus a Novell NetWare network operating system patch, court officials are testing all their older PCs with Check 2000 for MS-DOS from Greenwich Mean Time'User Technology Associates Inc. of Arlington, Va.

''After two months of working on PCs that have MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 operating systems, Southern District officials installed Check 2000 at the clerk's office in early June, said Richard Allen, a PC systems manager. They created a batch file that runs in each system's log-in script and had to work with the set commands in the autoexec.bat file, he said.

''The court paid Greenwich Meantime UTA $21,000 for a 600-user Check 2000 license, Allen said.

''The Southern District has a mix of Dell Computer Corp., Gateway Inc. and IBM Corp. servers running Novell NetWare 4.11 and 3.12, in addition to AST Research Inc., Dell and Gateway client PCs. The clients run Corel WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows 3.1, WordPerfect 8.0 for Windows 95 and Lotus cc:Mail 6.03.

''The Check 2000 tool seems to pick up everything on the hard drive,Allen said.

''After the Check 2000 deployment in the clerk's office, Allen and his colleagues plan to install it in the judges' chambers.
