FEB. 8—Agency information technology executives list cybersecurity and the IT work force shortage among the top issues they face, a new survey shows.

Last year's survey raised the issue of whether CIOs were playing a role within their agencies (see GCN story at ). IT executives this year reported they were making "slow but steady progress," Wohlleben said.The annual survey polled 34 executives across government as well as overseers in Congress and the Office of Management and Budget.The full report will eventually be posted at

FEB. 8'Agency information technology executives list cybersecurity and the IT work force shortage among the top issues they face, a new survey shows.

Nearly every IT executive interviewed for the 10th annual survey by the Information Technology Association of America in Arlington, Va., mentioned the critical nature of the worker shortage, said Paul A. Wohlleben, a partner with Grant Thorton LLP of Vienna, Va., and a project manager for the ITAA study.

"Few people have entered federal services in the last few years," Wohlleben said, and the work force problem "is probably only going to get worse before it gets better."

The worker shortage is spurring additional outsourcing and forcing more agencies to look at moving to the private sector functions that traditionally have been handled by the government. Seat management PC outsourcing contracts are an example of agencies treating those needs as a service and hiring contractors to do the work.

Security is an especially important concern because of the role it plays in agency electronic government initiatives, CIOs said.

The survey highlights eight IT issues:
