Storage maker Mylex Corp. is bringing out a line of RAID controllers that use the Ultra 160/m SCSI interface.

The eXtremeRAID 2000 and AcceleRAID 352 controllers from Mylex, a Fremont, Calif., company recently acquired by IBM Corp., both use the new SCSI interface to transfer data at up to 160 megabytes/sec, marketing vice president Eric Herzog said.

The eXtremeRAID 2000 controller has the same processor and other features as Mylex's Fibre Channel eXtremeRAID 3000 controller, Herzog said.

A 233-MHz Intel StrongArm SA110 RISC processor and a RAID coprocessor power the controller, which has a 64-bit, 66-MHz PCI 2.2 bus.

The bus transfers data at rates of 200 megabytes/sec and performs more than 8,000 i/o operations per second, Herzog said.

Fast I/O

The eXtremeRAID 2000's four Ultra 160/m SCSI channels support up to 60 disk drives for up to 4.32T of storage, he said.

The AcceleRAID 352, an entry-level model in the company's Ultra/160m SCSI family, has a 100-MHz Intel i960RN RISC processor and two Ultra 160/m SCSI low-voltage-differential channels. Its 64-bit, 33-MHz PCI bus has a sustained data-transfer rate of 200 megabytes/sec and can perform more than 7,000 I/O operations per second, Herzog said.

The entry-level controller runs up to 30 drives for up to 2.16T of storage.

Mylex has added ease-of-use features such as a Web Array Manager interface for remote management of RAID systems, Herzog said.

Pricing for the eXtremeRAID 2000 starts at $2,099 and $999 for the AcceleRAID 352. The controllers are not yet discounted on the General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule.
