The Defense Department's San Antonio Metropolitan Area Network has helped at least one DOD organization gain bandwidth more easily. 'We've avoided having to put in new circuits for additional bandwidth,' said Terry B. Carlisle, operations chief for the Tri-Service Infrastructure Management Program Office at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.The Defense Information Systems Agency in 1998 set up the MAN through a $2.8 million communications project. Since then, DOD organizations in the area have been establishing OC-12 links to the Synchronous Optical Network. The Naval Sea Systems Command opened a supercomputing center March 31 to test aircraft and shipboard missile systems.The NAVSEA Fleet Advanced Supercomputing Technology Center in Dam Neck, Va., will model situations that involve multiple ships and sites, command officials said.The center has a 32-processor SGI Origin2000 supercomputer capable of 76.8 billion floating-point operations per second.Connected on the 155-Mbps Defense Research and Engineering Network, NAVSEA researchers can also tap an eight-processor SGI Origin2000 supercomputer and a dual-processor SGI Onyx2 visualization system. Sherri Wasserman Goodman, deputy undersecretary of Defense for environmental security in the Office of Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, last month presented Raytheon Co. with the Nunn-Perry Award. The award recognizes the company's mentoring of a small, minority-owned business.Raytheon's imagery and geospatial systems division in Garland, Texas, helped RS Information Systems Inc. of McLean, Va., improve its software development processes and earn a Capability Maturity Model Level 2 rating from the Software Engineering Institute at Car-negie Mellon University. The CMM ratings range from Level 1 to Level 5.RS Information Systems is working on an application development contract for the Office of Naval Research, Raytheon spokeswoman Blanche E. Necessary said. At the Defense@E-Business Executive Summit set for next week, a host of senior Defense Department officials will discuss DOD's electronic-commerce efforts.The speakers include acting deputy chief information officer Paul Brubaker, CIA chief technology officer for collaboration Calvin Andrus and National Security Agency CIO Terry Santavicca.More information is available online at .
