Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 last week received the best-of-show award from Government Computer News during the fifth annual best new product awards ceremony at the FOSE trade show in Washington.

Exchange Server 2000 led 14 other new products selected by GCN editors as the most innovative at FOSE.

'This year's entries reflected the rise of networked systems as platforms for transactional and electronic commerce activities in government,' said Thomas R. Temin, GCN editorial director and one of 15 editors who judged the products. 'The judges felt that Exchange Server 2000 best represented the innovation happening in today's wired world.'

Judges selected winners in 14 information technology categories:

•'IBM Corp. received three best new product awards. The Netfinity 6000R topped the enterprise server or system category; the ThinkPad 600X won in the portable computer category; and the Avid XpressDV-IBM IntelliStation combination won for best technical-user computer.

•'Hewlett-Packard Co. received two awards. For the second year in a row, HP's Digital Sender was named the best enterprise peripheral. This year the 8100C version won; the 9100C took the prize last year. HP's e-Vectra desktop system won in the end-user computer category.

•'In the display category, there was a tie. The CP-13t Multimedia LCD Projector from Boxlight Corp. of Poulsbo, Wash., and the MultiSync LCD 1525X monitor from NEC Technologies Inc. of Itasca, Ill., both earned honors.

•'Xerox Corp. won in the printer category, through its recent acquisition of Tektronix Inc., for its Phaser 850.

•'Corel's Linux OS Deluxe earned the top spot in the end-user software category.

•'Virtual Ink Corp. of Boston won in the end-user peripheral category for Mimio Version 1.1.

•'In communications hardware, judges chose BIG/ip Version 3.0 from F5 Networks Inc. of Seattle.

•'JetForm Corp. of Ottawa received the award in the technical-user software category for e-Process Framework.

•'LaserFiche Document Imaging of Torrance, Calif., took the prize in the enterprise software category for LaserFiche WebLink 4.31.

•'Dell's PowerEdge 2450 won in the workgroup and departmental server category.

•'Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 got the nod for workgroup and departmental software as well as the best-of-show award.

Judges selected the winning products from a group of 70 finalists. Companies nominated 143 products for consideration. In a double-blind process, judges rated each entry for innovation, usability, specifications and value. Entries accumulating the most points earned finalist awards.

Post-Newsweek Business Information Inc., GCN's parent company, owns the FOSE trade show.
