Two makers of data warehousing software are bundling their products into a specialized data mart package for federal, state and local governments.

The package, called the SAS Intelligent Data Warehouse Manager or IDM, combines the IT Service Vision tool from SAS Institute Inc. of Cary, N.C., and an activity-measuring tool called Usage Tracker from Pine Cone Systems Inc. of Englewood, Colo.

The client-server IDM gathers performance and usage statistics about an organization's data warehouse and stores them inside its own data warehouse, said Frank Lieble, a program manager with the SAS Institute Public Sector Group.

Database administrators can analyze patterns of access frequency, data dormancy, system resources and other metrics.

Distinct from industry

SAS conceived the project to address government cost and management issues that are distinct from those confronting private-sector organizations, Lieble said.

IDM runs under Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, IBM AIX and SunSoft Solaris. It works with relational databases from Oracle Corp., Sybase Inc., Informix Corp. of Menlo Park, Calif., NCR Corp. of Dayton, Ohio, and IBM Corp. Later this year SAS may add support for Microsoft SQL Server, Lieble said.

The list price is $95,000 for servers with up to eight processors, Lieble said.
