DLA uses seat management for remote net services

Wang Government Services Inc. last month took over remote network management for the Defense Logistics Agency.

The McLean, Va., company also recently assumed responsibility for on-site maintenance.

The work comes under a five-year, $20 million blanket purchasing agreement for seat management services that DLA set on April 14, said Chad Craner, a contracting officer representative at the Defense Department agency.

Four other vendors bid on the project. The procurement took 14 months from requirements analysis to BPA signing, he said.

DLA has the option to extend the project beyond its Fort Belvoir, Va., headquarters.

'The first task is headquarters. They're interested in moving to other sites, but there's nothing firm yet,' said Jim Destival, vice president and general manager of Wang's defense operations.

In addition, DLA recently placed an order for 60 PCs from Wang through the BPA, he said.

On-site support

The contract includes on-site computing services, such as network monitoring, asset management, help desk support, and hardware and software configuration help.

Improving performance is DLA's goal, said Larry Wilson, the agency's acting executive director for corporate information services. Saving money and being able to 'tap into a contractor's expertise' are secondary aims, he said.

Because DLA now will pay for each PC based on each user's needs'such as having help desk calls answered within a certain time period'the agency will have a better idea how much it is spending for network management and related services, Wilson said.

DLA headquarters is upgrading its LANs' network operating system from Version 4 of Novell NetWare to Version 5.0, Destival said. Ultimately, it might change to Microsoft Windows 2000.

'We're anticipating a task order' to do that work, he said.
