A new Web server appliance from Cobalt Networks Inc. comes packaged with a preinstalled database and Level 1 RAID.

The RaQ 4r server from the Mountain View, Calif., company is a single-purpose appliance, senior product marketing manager Peder Ulander said.

Inside the device is a 450-MHz Intel-compatible processor with 512K of Level 2 cache. It has dual 10/100Base-T Ethernet and UltraWide SCSI interfaces, plus a PCI expansion slot and a Universal Serial Bus port.

The open-source InterBase 6 Structured Query Language database and Apache Web Server software run on the RaQ 4r under Linux. It supports common gateway interface, Perl and PHP scripting and 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer encryption.

To work with Active Server Pages, Cobalt Networks integrated ChiliSoft ASP into the RaQ 4r, Ulander said. The software from Cobalt Networks' ChiliSoft division of Bellevue, Wash., displays ASP Web pages on non-Microsoft platforms.

The server's two disk drives provide redundancy through Level 1 disk-mirroring RAID.

A standard rack can accommodate 42 of the slim 1U, 1.75-inch-high RaQ 4r units, Ulander said. Cobalt Networks' partner companies offer load balancing and clustering products to make multiple units act like a supercomputer.

The RaQ 4r comes in two configurations. The model with 256M of RAM and two 20G hard drives sells for $3,999. The other, with 512M of RAM two 30G drives, is $4,799.
