A company that makes legacy-to-Web middleware has extended its product to the burgeoning mainframe-to-handheld sector.

Jacada already had products to convert text information from legacy systems to Hypertext Markup Language, Java and Visual Basic, said product marketing manager Brian A. Anderson, and the next step was to design something for the Palm OS.The Jacada application server software runs in the Microsoft Windows NT, IBM AS/400 and OS/390, and SunSoft Solaris environments.Jacada for Palm uses HTML 3.2 to create pages suitable for the small handheld screen, Anderson said. It performs Web clipping and compiles native Palm Query Applications that run on the client handheld devices.For example, Jacada takes pages that require horizontal scrolling, which is difficult on a Palm OS device, and formats them so the user can scroll through vertically.Users can select items with the stylus of the handheld computer instead of tabbing through a green-screen list of options, Anderson said.Using standard HTML editing tools, developers can customize the Web-clipped code.Although Jacada is optimized for the Palm VII wireless device, it will run on other handhelds that use the Palm OS, said John A. Inkley, federal sales manager for Palm Inc.An initial installation of the Jacada products costs about $200,000 for a developer's kit plus several hundred user licenses, senior vice president David W. Holmes said.
