Compaq rolls out thin, rack-mount servers

By Patricia DaukantasGCN StaffCompaq Computer Corp.'s thin-server products include a 1.75-inch-high unit with a 133-MHz front-side bus and up to 4G of memory.The Compaq ProLiant DL360 'is a general-purpose server in a 1U form factor,' said Brad Anderson, vice president of corporate servers in Compaq's industry-standard server group.Up to 42 of the 1U units fit in a standard rack for data center and enterprise use, Anderson said.Thin and accommodatingThe DL360, the thinnest of the three new ProLiant servers, accommodates two processor configurations: either a single 550-MHz Pentium III or dual 800-MHz Pentium IIIs. The server accepts 128M to 4G of synchronous dynamic RAM.It comes with one 64-bit and one 32-bit full-length PCI expansion slot, support for two 1-inch-wide Ultra2 or Ultra3 Wide SCSI hot-plug hard drives, and two Fast Ethernet network interface cards.Anderson said the thin server can run Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Novell NetWare 5, Linux or SCO UnixWare from Santa Cruz Operation Inc. of Santa Cruz, Calif.'When you get into a 1U form factor, the engineering challenges are much greater because you don't have as much space,' Anderson said.The 1U DL360 manages to fit into its skinny package a low-profile CD-ROM drive and a standard floppy drive.Compaq's new four-way servers, the ProLiant DL580 and ML570, can handle up to four 700-MHz Pentium III Xeon processors, Anderson said. Both can have up to 8G of synchronous dynamic RAM.The DL580 comes in a 4U (7-inch) rackmount chassis with six PCI slots, four of them hot-pluggable, and a Fast Ethernet network card that can be upgraded to Gigabit Ethernet.The ProLiant ML570 comes in tower or 7U rackmount chassis. The server can hold up to a dozen 18.2G Wide Ultra3 SCSI hard drives for a total of 218.4G of internal storage.Starting prices for the new ProLiants are $3,970 for the DL360, $8,980 for the ML570 and $9,450 for the DL580.
