By Shruti Dat'GCN StaffThe IRS' End-User Computing Support Division will use a computer personality migration tool to standardize the agency's desktop PC environment across the service over the next several months.The Treasury Department agency selected the Personality Tranxport Professional migration tool from Tranxition Corp. of Beaverton, Ore., to capture data files, configurations and personal elements from individual PCs and transfer them.Each PC has up to 8,000 settings'e-mail, contacts, spreadsheets, Microsoft PowerPoint templates, signatures, bookmarks and most recently used documents, said Ken Mackin, Tranxition president and chief executive officer.The IRS plans to complete the migration by July, said Thomas C. Hoffman, IRS director of the End-User Computing Support Division.The Tranxition contract will be delivered through a blanket purchasing agreement Treasury established with Intellisys Technology Corp. of Fairfax, Va., in 1998.Tranxition's PT Pro application will move information from 137,000 PCs at 54 locations around the country.Hoffman said the agency plans to reduce the number of PCs to 100,000 in an attempt to bring the ratio to one system per user.PT Pro supports cross-version and cross-OS migration for Microsoft Windows 9x, NT and 2000; Outlook; Exchange and Office 9x and 2000.'One of the things we recognized as we began standardizing is that we needed a tool to take the current desktop state to the new system. If not, there is a tremendous loss of productivity,' Hoffman said.The agency plans to upgrade its PCs to at least 166-MHz Pentiums by the end of the year. It will also standardize the installation of NT and upgrade to Office 2000, officials said.
