MicroStrategy Inc.'s latest core business intelligence platform connects new Web data analysis tools to data warehouses.

MicroStrategy 7 is based on the Extensible Markup Language and open architectures, said Srikant Gokulnatha, product manager for the Vienna, Va., company. The new release of the software comprises more than 4 million lines of code and took four years to develop, Gokulnatha said.

The front and back ends run under Microsoft Windows NT or Unix, and the middleware under NT. MicroStrategy 7 integrates with database products from Oracle Corp., Microsoft Corp. and IBM Corp.

A collaborative analytics feature apportions data analysis chores between the middle-tier MicroStrategy Intelligence Server and the user's database and then combines the results.

Some functions are most efficiently performed in the database, 'because that's where all the data is,' Gokulnatha said. But databases and data warehouses do not support advanced statistical functions.

'The engine is smart enough to recognize what can be done on the database and what can be done in the middle tier and combine the two,' Gokulnatha said.

Better browsing

Another new feature in MicroStrategy 7 is context-driven investigative workflow. An organization can tailor the environment to guide its users through a series of questions that explore the data available, Gokulnatha said.

The company also revamped the platform's browser interface for easier use.

The two main components are called Intelligence Server and Web Server. Also present in MicroStrategy 7 is a software development kit for building customized applications. The products start at $30,000 per CPU for Intelligence Server and $15,000 per CPU for Web Server.
