By Tony Lee OrrGCN StaffMARCH 21'Using a 'Survivor'-themed backdrop to discuss matters before the Chief Information Officers Council during the FOSE 2001 trade show in Washington, James Flyzik said today that he will be leaving the proverbial island.The Treasury Department CIO has been the council's vice chairman for the past two years and has agreed to stay on through the Bush transition. Flyzik said that he will step down as soon as the president selects a new deputy director for management for the Office of Management and Budget. Bush has indicated that the new OMB deputy director also will serve as a governmentwide CIO.'I can't let this go on,' Flyzik said, stopping a vote that pitted him against Housing and Urban Development Department CIO Gloria Parker and acting Agriculture Department CIO Ira Hobbs for ouster from CIO Island. 'It's time for me to depart.'The CIO Council used the island backdrop to discuss activities of its various committees while casting votes on candidates for ouster. Flyzik, who received a couple of votes supporting his departure, suggested that 'good hair' put him at the top of the cast-off list.The next vice chairman would do well to continue to empower federal CIOs and 'to get out of their way,' Flyzik said.'We need to find new horizons and get away from traditional government methods. We need to realize that the Clinger-Cohen Act gave us more freedoms,' he said, referring to the Information Technology Management and Reform Act. 'With all the improvements we have made, we haven't made a dent in what this group can do.'
