FOSE show turns 25
Twenty-five years ago at the time of the first FOSE trade show, the Apple computer was still parked in its inventors' garage, and the CP/M operating system had yet to achieve desktop dominance.
| GCN STAFFTwenty-five years ago at the time of the first FOSE trade show, the Apple computer was still parked in its inventors' garage, and the CP/M operating system had yet to achieve desktop dominance.The high-tech standouts at the 1976 FOSE were Dictaphones and photocopiers. There have been some startling technological advances since then.FOSE will open March 20 at the Washington Convention Center with live webcasts. Vendors will exhibit software for such things as high-speed Internet connections aboard airplanes. Agencies will tell how they buy'and sell'online. And chief information officers, the flag bearers of the government's ongoing tech revolution, will gather to discuss trends such as m-business, or mobile commerce.FOSE keynoters of past years have included luminaries such as Colin Powell, Bill Gates, Janet Reno, Ross Perot and Norman Schwarzkopf. This year, the keynoter will be Microsoft Corp. senior vice president Craig Mundie, the architect of Microsoft's .Net strategy.The CIO Council will present the 'CIO Survivor' series to answer the crucial question: Who's still standing after the presidential transition? Presenters will be James Flyzik, Treasury CIO and deputy assistant secretary for information systems, and Alan Balutis, former co-chairman of the council's E-Government Committee.A panel debate on Linux and competing environments will feature Jon 'Maddog' Hall, executive director of Linux International of Amherst, N.H.; Douglas Miller, a Microsoft group manager; and Anne Thomas Manes, Sun Microsystems Inc.'s director of market innovation.Senior executives from industry will discuss best practices in electronic business, technology convergence and wireless technology. Panelists include Gregory Akers, a vice president at Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose, Calif.; John Moore, a Dell Computer Corp. vice president and CIO for the public sector; and Jerry Jalaba, a vice president of Palm Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif.For the first time, the CIO Council, the Chief Financial Officers Council and the Procurement Executives Council will all meet at FOSE 2001 to discuss their strategic initiatives.A special exhibit at the show will display cartoonists' views of technology over the past 25 years.The trade show floor will be open March 20 through March 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit for additional information.
