The Defense Department wants to make sure agencies its contracting officers do business with are getting it right.

Deidre Lee, director of Defense procurement, said she and her staff have met with representatives of the Interior and Treasury departments and is requiring them to 'provide some assurances' that their contracting practices follow federal laws and regulations. The effort to improve contracting practices is part of the Get It Right campaign that Defense is conducting with the General Services Administration.

GSA and DOD launched Get It Right in July after contracting problems surfaced at both agencies. The campaign, in part, was created to convince lawmakers that agency officials have fixed the problems and do not need stringent congressional controls.

DOD officials also will meet with NASA, the National Institutes of Health and other agencies to make sure they support the Defense policy memo on the proper use of non-DOD contracts, Lee said.

Lee will send a letter by the end of the year asking the agencies for their support.

'We will ask these assisting agencies to provide the same information and assurance GSA has granted us,' Lee said. 'We will ask them to make sure people do what needs to be done, people focus on competition and whether they are putting in right DOD terms and conditions.'

Lee said agencies also should be prepared to go through an internal procurement management review to make sure a contract's scope is proper, prices are fair, fees are appropriate and that proper post-award administration is performed.
