PANASONIC OF NORTH America’s KXMC6040 is a solidly performing MFP with copy, scan, print and fax capabilities, and it comes at a great price of $749.
The KX-MC6040 seems to concentrate on ease of use, both for walk-up users and those back at their desks.
A bright LCD screen helps walk-up users easily select the tasks they want to accomplish. Remote users can install the company’s Multi-function Station software, which allows them to control the unit.
From a desktop PC, you can monitor the KX-MC6040, perform optical character recognition scans, e-mail a scanned document, send a fax to an e-mail address or another fax machine, or even send a message to a single person or stored list of people.
The remote control software is the best we have seen for an MFP, which is even more impressive given the unit’s entrylevel price. The color accuracy of the KX-MC6040 is good, though we found some flaws with very fine images or letters on top of graphics.
However, they were hardly noticeable without magnification. And those shortcomings were offset by the flawless text output. For text printing, the KX-MC6040 was the best we found. Even when examining output with a professional magnification device, we couldn’t detect any flaws. You can be confident of good quality when printing your most important documents on the KX-MC6040.
The unit’s major shortcoming is its lack of speed. Although not terrible, the machine was behind the curve in terms of standard print times. It printed our 30- page text document in 1 minute, 50 seconds and our graphics-heavy test file in 2 minutes, 51 seconds.
The KX-MC6040 would keep a small workgroup extremely happy and could produce some amazing text documents with good color, as long as not too many people need to use it at the same time.
